I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my daughter. We read the instructions and was not that impressed after the first use. We used jolly ranchers hard candy the first time and while the cotton candy was tasty it was not fluffy and produced so little that it was not worth the effort. We decided to give it a try a second time after we took the Christmas tree down. My daughter suggested we use the candy canes that had decorated the tree which was a great idea because we usually just throw them out. We do not use regular peppermint candy canes. We use the lifesavers candy canes every year because they come in different fruit flavors. I decided to crush up the candy canes and mix with regular white sugar. That turned out so much better than the first time. The sugar made it light and fluffy and gave it the texture you expect of cotton candy. The crushed candy canes gave it a really good flavor that made it taste better than regular cotton candy (fluffy sugar). I only gave it 3 stars because there are a couple of things I do not like about it even after finally getting it to make decent cotton candy. First, the front of the cotton candy maker has 2 suction cups to hold it in place and of course they do NOT hold it in place. Someone has to try to hold the cotton candy maker in place to keep it from sliding around while another person is trying to twirl the cotton candy around the wand which brings me to the second issue. Some of the candy and sugar fly dangerously in the air as you try to put it into the heating element as it spins around. It could seriously injure someone. The concept of cotton candy at home is a great idea but the design could have been a bit better and definitely safer.

I was not sure about this product after I read the reviews so as soon as I received it I opened it up to try it, even though I bought it as a Valentine present for my grandchildren. They love cotton candy and I thought it would be better than buying it packaged at the store. I am not the cotton candy fan but this was great. We used life savers and it was YUMMY!!! I let it heat up for 5 minutes as the instructions said, turned it off and put 3 cherry life savers in it, and turned it back on. Cotton candy immediately came flowing out, What fun and it was so good, cherry cotton candy. It did not rock all over as some reviews said. And I was afraid it might be a pain to clean but it was NOT. I think my grandkids and their mama will love making cotton candy. I also used some colored cake decorating sugar and it worked good too but not really as good as the hard candy. The only negative was it does not make a huge amount each time. but when you are making sugar treats for kids that might be a good thing.

Just follow the directions, it really works well, I LOVE rootbeer hard candies with this, it seems to take the flavor of the hard candies and intensify them when they are spun, have used butterscotch, werthers original, peppermint, even tried nerds(the nerds don't work) the key is to use HARD candies.
