I bought these to make a chocolate chess set for a gaming family I know. My challenges were not with the molds but with the chocolate I used. I used high-quality belgium chocolate. As a hint to you, if your chocolate starts to turn chalky/white after a few days, add a bit of coconut oil (solid at room temp, low melting point) to the chocolate to help it melt and solidify better.Overall the molds were very cute and well-appreciated :)

I purchased this mold as well as the "pawns" mold two years ago. My husband coaches our elementary school's HUGE chess club and team, and I wanted to make a chess cake for our annual barbecue. I decorated a Costco sheet cake with squares to make the board, and used white and semi-sweet melting chocolate to make the pieces.Note: If you want truly 3D pieces, you will need to make multiple sets of chocolate pieces. Another reviewer posted excellent instructions -- which I wish I'd been able to read before I did this for the first time. I make multiple sets of white and semi-sweet (or sometimes I'll marble the chocolate for one set), then when half the pieces are chilled and set, I trim the edges with a very sharp paring knife, fill the molds again with melted chocolate, and carefully lay the completed halves on top of the melted chocolate. After chilling again, I unmold the pieces and they come out 3D. I follow up again with the paring knife to make sure the edges look good. These are a huge hit with our chess kids and I've often made little bags of pawns for "congratulations" gifts to players, and "thank-you" gifts to coaches and hosts. For care: follow the instructions -- none of these molds are microwave- or dishwasher safe. However, with handwashing, they hold up very well. I will sometimes let all of the chocolate set, then break off what's left before washing with gentle dish soap. Let air dry completely before putting them away.

The only problem I found was the bishop pieces did not compliment each other... I had one side of a mouth on one half and the other on the opposite... no one noticed... I did a whole chess set on a cake for a 'Pastors desert' night. Took a lot of time, but was very satisfying watching it being eaten.
